Graecum nomen, sic dictum quod omnia comprehendat; Graece Πανδέκτης: in numero plur. Pandectae, Πανδέκται quasi dicas, Omnium rerum receptacula, variorum olim librorum tituli fuêre. Et quidem Πανδέκτην, masculinô genere et numero singulari in Digestorum Inscriptione legendum nonnulli existimant, quorum opinionem firmat Harmenopulus l. 1. Epit. 1. Υ῞ςτερον δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς Ιοὐςτινιανὸς τὰς πολλὰς ἐκθέσεις τῶ νόμων εν πεντήκοντα βιβλίοις διὰ σοφῶν ἀνδρῶν σπουδαίως συγήγαγε. ἃ καὶ Δίγεςτα ἤτοι Πανδέκτην, ὡς πάντων δικτικὸν τῶ νόμων ἐκάλεσεν. Postmedam vero Imperator Iustinianus multas expositiones illas Legum, in quinquaginta libros, Sapientium viroram operâ, diligenter collectos digessit: et proin Digesta seu Pandectam, utpote omnes Leges continentem, vocavit. Sunt tamen qui Pandectas magis probent, quô titulô quondam inscriptos a Veterib. libros Plin. docet, Praef. Histor Natur. inquiens: Iam Musae, πανδέκται, ἐγχειρίδιον, λειμὼν, πινακίδιον, etc. Et certe Tullii Tironis, qui M. Ciceronis alumnus ac libertus fuerat, Pandectarum, meminit Gellius l. 13. c. 9. Tullius Tiro --- libros --- de variis atque promiscuis quaestionibus composuit. In his esse praecipui videntur, quos Graecô titulô Πανδέκται inscripsit, tamquam omne verum atque doctrinarum genus continentes. Dorothei Pandectae citantur, a Clem. Alexandrinol. 1. Strom. etc. Quorum exemplô Veteres Iurisconsulti, Volumina ius continentia Digestorum, et Iustinianus Imperator, sive, quibus id commiserat, Volumen, quod omnes legum disputationes ac decisiones continet, Pandectarum quoque nomine vocavêre: qua de re Imperator l. 20. §. omnia igitur C. de Vet. Iur. enucleando, ita loquitur: Nomen libris L. imposuimus Digestorum seu Pandectarum, qui omnes disputationes et decisiones in se habent legitimas, et quod fuit undique collectum, hoc in sinus receperunt, in centum quinquaginta pene milia versuum totum opus consummantes. Notabant autem Graeci Pandectas per π. cum accentu circumflexo, unde facili liturâ Latinorum ff. quô Digesta seu Pandectae illis signantur, ortum, sed hac de re vide plura apud Anton. Thysium IC. Notis ad A. Gellii Praefationem ad Noctes Atticas, ubi ad exemplum Plinii istiusmodi Inscriptionum festivitates salse deridet Gellius, et supra in voce Digesta, nec non aliquid ubi de Literis Pisanis, et infra voce Polyhistor.
